Task 54 - Evaluation Q7

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

By comparing and contrasting my prelim with my film opening, I can see that I have made a significant change with my skills to do with planning, filming and editing. I have also learnt many new things such as putting effects on to our videos and adding titles. Between the prelim and now, I have become familiar with the editing programmes such as Premier Pro and After Effects.

Pre Production
Final Video Storyboard
Storyboard: While planning our prelim, we did not make a storyboard as we didn't think it would be as effective and that we could just be spontaneous. However, this affected us because we were very unorganised when it came to shot types, locations and etc.  As we got to the filming stage, we felt that we should've been more prepared as to where exactly we are filming and what scenes in that location, because it was very time-consuming to find locations and settings. However, in comparison to our final video storyboard, there was many step-by-step pictures to illustrate exactly what we were going to film, with clear demonstration of the shot type and location. There was no need for us to improvise with any of the locations or shots (except if the location was unavailable for any reason) as we had efficiently organised it beforehand.
Two Locations
Location & Prop Planning: Due to locations in our prelim, we were very spontaneous with it. We were given a setting as 'Heathrow Airport' however due to our lack of time and preparation - we could only film this in college. With the props we were also only given a 'red & blue jacket' in which the actors are wearing. We didn't have any real props such as a suitcase or tickets etc. We only had a jacket and a notebook. On the other hand, with Refugee we had quite a bit of time and we planned all the locations and production dates before actually filming so we knew where to go, on what day and what to film (as shown in our pitch.) We had many different locations to differentiate the different kinds of people as shown in Refugee. We had many props for our film which we thought would be best - for different settings, we made it suitable and realistic to the best of our abilities. E.G. Office - Files, telephone, paperwork etc.
Props - Notebook & Blue Jacket
180 Degree rule
Research: For our prelim, we had done no research whatsoever to build upon how to plan it all out and then to film. We were only shown different camera angles and camera rules such as over the shoulder and the 180 degree rule - which we used effectively in our prelim.
Blog Research Posts

For our final video, we did large amounts of research to put together our final piece. We researched into genre types, sounds, title conventions, distributors and etc. As for this, our outcome is reflective of our research as without it, we wouldn't have known how to make it as professional.

Production and Post Production
Camera Work: An example of our progression with the camera work would be the use of match cuts. In our pre-lim our match cut was very basic and there was only one. In our final video the match cuts look so much more professional and there was quite a few.
Match cut transitions
Another example would be the use of panning across with the actor. In our prelim it was very disruptive and quite hard to film the pan as many people were walking through and etc. In our final video, our pan had more of a message which I think shows our progression. It also worked effectively with our video - it fitted in well.

Sound:The sound in our prelim is background sound. It slightly worked as there was many people around at the time and considering our setting was supposed to an airport, there wasn't such a fuss as to muting it. We didn't add any additional sounds or music.
However, for our final video we did huge amounts of work looking into sounds and it's importance. We didn't use any dialogue only foley and ambient sounds as it was a title sequence we added sounds and music we thought would be best to fit for our genre. Also, one strong sound that stands out to me from our final video is the whooshing sound when the flashbacks were shown. Not only is the sound important, it contrasts two different scenes.

Editing: Editing was my favourite part of the process in both cases. It was fun to edit with new softwares such as Adobe Premier Pro and After Effects. In our prelim we were very new with these softwares and in that case only edited by putting scenes together so it was very simplistic. In contrast to this, for our final video we had experimented a lot and became familiar with the softwares. We managed to make our title sequence look very realistic by adding titles, our idents and distribution companies, sounds and music and video effects.

We added all these distribution companies, idents, titles
and effects ourselves.
