13. Macro and Micro Analysis

THE MACRO AND MICRO ANALYSIS OF 3 FILMS OF MY CHOSEN GENRE

My chosen genre is 'drama' and the three film title sequences I'm going to analyse are the classics; "Titanic", "Pride & Prejudice" and "Twilight".

"Titanic":-

The macro elements of this film shows a large amount of people on a ship, waving, saying their goodbyes. The ship is massive with a huge amount of people which can only mean that it's going to be a long journey and by this, the audience may establish that the whole film is based on the ship. The macro elements show that there are family and friends lovingly saying goodbyes which also gives the audience the sense that the film will be emotional. And instantly, they may recognise that the genre is drama due to the emotionality and melodramatic music in the background. We are not introduced to any specific characters in this title sequence because it just shows a flashback of the ship leaving. The colour of the title sequence is a sepia colour which may or may not trigger the audience's mind the possibility that it's a flashback/story/memory by someone. The families look like typical American families that are represented as middle/high class people due to their attire.

The micro elements of this film include shots and the angles it's taken from. The camera seems to move in all directions of the ship, whether it is swirling around, moving up, down, right or left. The camera turns and shows close ups of people waving. Also, it moves at a slow pace which kind of blends with the background music's level. This emphasises the ship which yet again gives the audience a hint how relevant the ship is in the film. The title sequence is very dramatic because it foreshadows that these families will be corrupted later on in the film. When it comes to the editing of the title sequence, I can tell that the film title sequence is in a sepia colour for a few minutes which could give the idea of a flashback. The fading between each shots are quite slow which makes it very clear for the audience and makes it gentle. It is at a very slow pace and the fading of the previous shot overlaps the next one. When the title is revealed, the blue ocean is in the background also waving This links to the ship and yet again the whole film. The music sounds dramatic and very slow. It is very emotional which lets the audience establish that it will be an emotional film. The music slowly fades in and fades out of the title sequence. This makes it calming and relaxing. The location is an ocean next to a land for mainly middle class people. The setting involves the ship leaving and people on the land waving goodbyes to the people on the ship. The costumes are very elegant which gives us the idea that the people in this film are of high/middle class. The lightning is quite low in brightness and a yellowish brown colour which could represent the sorrow in this film.

The order of the title sequence in the film "Titanic" is as follows:

  • Film studio company
  • Production
  • Title
The beginning title sequence of this film is very short and simple which only informs of the main three important points and then gets right into the storyline.

"Pride and Prejudice" :-

The macro elements of this film shows a bright sunny day with birds chirping, which could give away clues about the genre or mood of the film. Soon after, it shows a young woman walking along the park while reading a book and this allows the audience to establish that she is the main character and it gives away some characteristics of the character. For example, her reading the book could imply that she is intelligent and wise. It shows the location of the film while she goes towards her house. The house and it's surroundings are very old fashioned with clothes being hung up to dry outside. This allows the audience to know that the film is based on an old fashioned storyline. As she enters the house, it shows the inside of the house and the other characters. From there, the movie starts. The characters and the location gives away that the family are middle class people in the olden era. It is shown stereotypically with how the characters are dressed, how they read books in the garden and where they live.

The micro elements of this film include the shots and angles it's taken from. At the beginning, the camera is still while the daylight comes in from dawn with birds chirping. The sun slowly starts to shine brighter as the camera stays still. When the sun is fully bright, the title of the film appears. This could suggest that the film will be quite pleasant and relaxing. Some may even notice that the genre is romance/drama. Soon after it shows a close up of the girl from a low angle while she's reading. The camera moves back as she walks forward. Then it shows her from a 180' wide angle as she walks to her house. The camera then stops following her and zooms into the house where we see another character and the movie begins. The speed of the camera is quite slow. The fading is long which avoids any sudden change in shots. It transitions well throughout the sequence. The costumes are very old fashioned. The girls are wearing old fashioned puffy dresses like girls used to wear in the olden times. The house is very old fashioned as it's so open and it's surroundings are very green. The sound is also very old fashioned with the piano playing and birds chirping. This gives the old theme as well as gives clues about the genre. Perhaps, it sounds quite romantic. The piano starts playing as the sunlight begins to appear at the beginning.

The order of the title sequence of this film is as follows:

  • Film studio company
  • Distribution company
  • Production
  • Title
The beginning title sequence of this film and the "Titanic" are both short and simple. Perhaps, the films that were made time ago generally didn't include the other titles in the beginning.

"Twilight" (Breaking Dawn Part Two) :-

The macro elements of this title sequence show the location of mountains and trees. It doesn't really tell the audience much about the storyline or plot idea. The location switches from red and white at a fast pace which could give the audience the idea about the genre. At one point, it showed the veins of a leaf in red which almost looked like human veins. It showed a wolf repeatedly as well. Hardly any characters were introduced but at the end of the title sequence, it shows a girls eyes where the pupil spreads blood to the rest of the eye. The colour red connotes danger. This may let the audience know that the film includes, danger, death and horror.

The micro elements include the shots and angles it's taken from. The camera catches the shots from a helicopter on and slowly goes through the location of mountains and trees. Soon after, when the title appears, the camera moves sideways. The location changes from the colour red to white and white to red at a fast pace which could give the audience the idea that there are some peace as well as danger involved. It shortly shows a river fall and the camera falls down with it(it moves down). Then it shows a wolf and the camera follows the wolf  as it runs. At the end, the camera takes a close up of the pupil of the girls eyes and slowly zooms out to create tension and make it effective. The music sounds pretty calming and dramatic at the same time as the wolf also whistles. There is a point where it quickly shows some organs of the human body in a fast pace which blends in with the leaves and trees to make it quite unnoticeable yet recognisable.

The order of the title sequence is as follows:
  • Company
  • Production (+ in association with)
  • Title
  • Main characters
  • Other characters
  • Cast
  • Costume designer
  • Music supervisor
  • Music
  • Visual effects supervisor
  • Editors
  • Production designer
  • Photography director
  • Co producer
  • Executive producers
  • Producer
  • Based on novel
  • Screenplay by
  • Director
The modern films have a way longer title sequence than the olden films such as "Titanic" and "Pride and Prejudice".
