Analyse two film title sequences
22 Jump Street
The first
title sequence that I analysed was 22 Jump Street. This movie was released in
2014. This title sequence for this movie is incredibly amazing as it contains a
variety of different title categories. There are titles on still images, titles
over moving images and titles using animation or motion. The music is fast
paced and exciting which appeals to the target audience. The opening of the title
sequence makes a reference to the previous films made within that franchise. You
can hear the characters dialogue and see them talking to each other. The viewer
is introduced to the main characters, the genre of the film and the narrative. The
genre of film is a hybrid as it is an action and a comedy. This is because
there is a lot of swearing and inappropriate actions as well as explosions and fight
scenes. The audience can easily understand that the plot is about two agents
that go undercover and cause havoc.
Multiple title
credits are used in this title sequence. They are shown on the mise-en-scene
which then transitions into a blank screen that is separate to the moving
images. They are written in a large and bold font across the screen. The first
title that appears is the name of the director as he is a significant person in
the production of the film. This
is then followed by the name of the screenwriters, producers and actors.
UP
The second film that I will analyse is an animation by Disney’s
Pixar: Up. This movie was released in 2009. Before the actual title sequence
begins the corporation’s logo along with its little ‘jingle’ comes on. This is
then followed by the start of an animated title sequence. In the opening you
can see a house with balloons coming out of it, this is important as this
relates to the narrative or the film. The music playing is upbeat and jolly
which implies that the film will be cheerful and jubilant. We are introduced to
the setting: the house yet are not introduces to the characters. The sequence
tells a story and basically follows the narrative. The audience can understand that
a flying house will somehow be involved in the plot. There are numerous title
credits used in this sequence. Similarly to 22 Jump Street, first the director’s
name is shown, followed by the rest of the people who helped with the
production (producers/ screen writers). In 22 Jump Street the films name is
constantly shown. However, in UP the films name is not revealed until the end of
the credits. It is the last thing the viewers see. This is affective as it automatically
tells the viewer that the feature film is about to begin. The genre of the film
I clearly an animation meant for family viewing, the film rating is a U.
