According to the BFI yearbook; animation, action and comedy were most successful at the UK box office. Animation("Despicable Me") was the most successful, action("Iron Man III") was the second most successful and comedy("The Hangover Part III") was the third.
Most popular movie with UK audiences

The least popular genres at the UK box office was war, documentary and romance. War("Lore") was the least successful, documentary("One Direction: This is us") was the second least successful and romance("I give it a year") was the third least successful genre.

Least popular movie with UK audiences

Out of all the UK films released in the year 2013, the genre 'documentary' had the biggest number of releases. 33 films of this genre was released as films and another 31 as independent films. That means altogether, 64 films of this genre was released.

Data of the genres

33 animated films were made in the years. 47 action films were made. The information about genre tells me that comedy was the a very common genre that made the most independent films. Documentary also had a high number of films released. The number of films of the genres 'Action' and 'Animation' are quite low perhaps because the production of it is much harder and requires much more. Animation is a genre which produces films digitally which is why it may be expensive, time consuming and pretty difficult. Also, action movies requires a lot of practice for the characters as it mainly consists of violence and danger. Overall, as mentioned in the beginning, animation and action are the most successful genres. Audience enjoy these genres the most. The digital work and the dangerous action makes the films extraordinary and appealing to watch.

People within the age group 15-24 years went to the cinema most and the most successful comedy film with this age group was 'Hangover Part III'.

The film 'Quartet' was the most popular film with the over 50's and this film is in the hybrid genre of comedy and drama.

The genres that were most popular with men was thriller, action and comedy films such as 'Captain Philips', 'Star trek into darkness' and 'Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa'. Women liked a wider range of genres such as documentary (One Direction: This is us), romance (About Time) and animation (Frozen).

'Quartet' (comedy/drama) and the 'Great Gatsby' (romantic/drama) were most popular with the above average AB audience.

The three films that were most popular with the 7-14 age group was 'One Direction: This is us', 'Wreck it Ralph' and 'Despicable me 2'. This tells me that they prefer animation and young characters. Many young girls are obsessed with the boy band 'One Direction' which could be the reason why it has been successful with them but if it was a documentary with different characters, it is less likely they would watch it. So, I would say that this age group would prefer the genre 'animation' as it is very lively and fun to watch, especially for that certain age group.

The films 'Frozen', 'The Croods' and 'Jack and the Giant Slayer' might be popular with the age group between 35-44 because of the way the film productions are made. Also, it looks playful and fun to watch. The technology has improved so much which allows animated films to seem real and believable with all the 3D effects and the use of emotions within the cartoon characters which actually makes the audience feel something and this amazes the audience, making them want to watch more. People within the age of 35-44 are not the only people who like animation,; nearly all age groups like animation which lead to that genre being the most successful genre at the box office. This genre can have all the other genres; it could have comedy, drama, romance, action, any genre which is also another reason why it is most successful. People may get bored of watching films with the same type of characters so, watching cartoon characters may be more exciting to watch.
Bar Chart of the genre data

The three films that were most popular with the 25-34 age group were 'Django Unchained', 'Fast and Furious 6' and 'Rush'.

The film 'Rush' and the film 'Oz The Great and Powerful' were most popular with the middle class audiences.

The popular films in London were 'Django Unchained' and 'Fast and Furious 6' whereas the popular films in Scotland were 'Sunshine on Leith' and 'Filth'. This suggests that the audience from London prefer action and western films whereas the audience from Scotland prefer comedy and musicals films. People from audience prefer to watch films that involve danger and violence while people from Scotland prefer to watch films that are more calming and relaxing.

It is possible that many people would assume comedy is the most successful genre due to the number of impressive comedies being released recently such as '21 Jumpstreet' and 'Identity Thief'. However, action and animation are the most successful which is also not surprising.
