Task 11 - BFI statistics yearbook

The BFI statistical yearbook 2014

The three most successful genres in the UK box office were action, animation and comedy. The least popular or successful genres in the UK box office were War, Documentary and surprisingly Romance.

In 2013-14 the genre Comedy had approximately 153 films released (whether they were successful or not) this was the largest number of films released for that year.  However, only 33 animated and 47 action movies were released. This clearly shows that comedy movies have been an audience favourite for many years.

Hangover part 3 was the favourite release from that year for people between the ages of 15-24. However people around the age of 50 mostly enjoyed Dramas/ comedies such as Quartet. Men preferred action and comedies whereas women preferred a broader range of films from documentary to romance. People from the age of 14-17 enjoyed films such as: One Direction This Is Us, Despicable me 2 and Wreck it Ralph. This insinuates that animation is a popular genre within that particular age group. This links to the fact that animations were also popular for adults between the ages of 35-44 as they would most likely take their children to go watch these movies. The top three were Frozen, The Croods and Jack the Giant Slayer. However, 25-34 year old prefer much more serious and enticing films such as: Fast and Furious 6, Django Unchained and Rush – moves that get your adrenaline going. I also researched that Middle class audiences preferred films like Captain Phillips, Rush and Oz the Great and Powerful.

A conclusion that I can make is that people from Scotland prefer to watch more movie made in the UK than people in London. This demonstrates that location as well as age is a key factor in audience preferences.
