Intro to genres
Definitions:
Genre: Type or category of a specific film/book/music etc. e.g. Horror, Thriller, Comedy etc.
Sub-Genre: Genre within a genre e.g Action & Adventure
Hybrid Genre: Two or more genres combined in one e.g RomCom
Codes & Conventions: Types of features used and expected for a specific category/genre e.g c&c's for horror would consist of; jumpscares, screams, blood etc.
Genre Tropes: Signifiers about the genre, more to do with the mise-en-scene e.g tropes for an action film would consist of fast cars, mid-air flyers
Our discussion about genres:
As a class we discussed the types of genres, tropes and codes and conventions that would consist of a specific type of genre. For example, we spoke about the genre of gangsters and the typical tropes for it. We came up with guns, poker tables, alcohol on tables (spirits), how the characters are dressed and how old they looked.
Personal preferred genres:
1. Genre: Comedy
Conventions of the genre that you most like: Slapsticks, black comedy, adult comedy
Films of this genre: Ted, White Chicks

Conventions of the genre that you most like: Binary opposition theory (good vs evil), fights, fast cars, explosions and crashes

Example 1:
Genre: Gangster movie
Main tropes: Alcohol on table, gun in the spotlight, lighting typically over poker table, dressed smart and typical
Example 2:
Genre: War movie
Main tropes: Camoflague clothing, dirty faces, tank in background
Example 3:
Genre: Romcom
Main tropes: high skirt, cleavage, flirty facial expressions, the setting - an office
