What is Genre?
A genre is a style or category within a medium. Genres are
important in the media and film industry as they help people establish the
differences between media forms. They also help establish certain expectations
and allow the audience to get familiar with the codes and conventions.
Sub-genres are different categories within a genre; more than one
genre.
A hybrid genre is two genres combined together to appeal to a variety
of different target audiences.
Code and conventions are the things that are stereotypically
inspected in films. Codes are used to create meaning and conventions are the
things stereotypically used to create these meanings.
Genre tropes are a part of the mise-en-scene that includes
signifiers that tell us about the genre. The main genetic signifiers for tropes
are: characters, colours, props, location, shot types, lighting etc. These make
it easy to identify the genre.
