Task 8 - Analysing My Favourite Film

Inception  Opening Title Sequence

In this post, I will be analysing the title sequence of one of my favourite films, Inception.

At the start of the scene, the title is immediatly introduced along with heartbeats sound effects used in the clip. This appears to be in the category of titles behind a black screen. In addition, the title seems to be in the font "Stencil STD" with a dark colour of red which can symbolise violence and murder. So, this hints at the genre of the film which appears to be action. Moreover, the title "Inception" also has small holes in it, which look like bullet holes. This adds to the tone of the film.

After the title is introduced, the director is then introduced. The font is the same style but the word "Director" is in white whilst the name of the director is red. This is to highlight the person that directed the film so the audience know him.

Next, the producer is shown. Shortly after the name "Christopher Nolan" is shown, classical music begins to play. this conflicts with the genre of the film as classical music and action do not compliment each other. As a result, it leaves the audience watching curious as to what the plot is.

After, the first cast member is introduced, which is Leonardo Dicaprio. In here, the type of category used is the titles behind a moving image. This is because the building seen behind the text is panning upwards after the title is introduced. The colour is white so that it can be easier to read for the audience. Also, the text size seems to be bigger than the other cast members' names which  indicates that Dicaprio is the main character in the film so the audience should pay close attention to him.  The building also gives us a clue of the setting. Since the building resembles a hotel, it is clear to the audience that the location is in a city, somewhere like New York.

Next is the rest of the cast members being introduced. As they are being shown, it appears to be that the motion of the titles are stylized. This goes under the sub-category of discrete titles. This is because each of the titles of the cast members' names come running in and they look as if they are being typed up as each letter comes on its own.

Then, the composer of the music is introduced. The title sequence used is titles behind  a moving image. This is because the long hotel building fades in next to the title. The title then pans to the right moving along with the hotel building. This makes it seem as if the building is synchronised with the title.

After the composer is shown, the cinematography is then introduced. Here, the music stops and the heartbeat sound effect comes in. This warns the audience that the film is almost about to start.

After all the crew and cast members are shown, the last titles introduced are the company names as well as the film studio name.
