Task 40 - PITCH 14: Technology Skills Audit - Hasan Bezginer

Technology Skills Audit

Task 40 - PITCH 13: Risk Assessment - Neelam Tabassum

Risk assessment

In this blog I will identify any risks that we may come across when filming at, and travelling to, our locations with some possible solutions to prevent risks.

Mark out of five for its likelihood:
1= very unlikely
5= very likely

Some potential risks are:
  • Bad weather – check the weather before we leave home and make sure we have other work to do if we have to stay indoors. - 5
  • Broken/damaged equipment – be careful and responsible, don’t do anything that you know you shouldn’t. Don’t be reckless be extra careful when handling equipment.- 4
  • Thieves – look after the equipment and don’t leave anything unattended. Make sure to check what we have with us when travelling from one place to another. - 4
  • Crowded place – be respectful and patient as many other people will be there. Don’t shame your school or cause trouble. Try to stay out of other people’s way.- 5
  • Actors might not show up – only work with people that we can trust and rely on and if someone doesn’t show up we should have other tasks to complete within that time or simply replace them. - 4
  • Delays/traffic – make sure to plan our journeys so that we don’t waste time. - 4
  • It gets dark quickly – we will need to start filming early in the morning while the sun is still out. - 2

Task 40 - PITCH 6: Audience Detail - Hasan Bezginer

Audience Detail

This is a video from my core target audience. Our core target audience is typically young adults, for example people from the age of 16- 25. This is because there are young people acting in the film and people prefer to watch movies that include actors of the same age.

This is a video from my wider target audience. My wider audience is people that would generally be interested in current affairs affairs and would like to learn more about the situation displayed in the film. This is possibly people from the age of 25-50.

I will attract my audience by using current affairs such as news about Syrian refugees, and informing them on the real life situation, this will give them an insight on the thoughts and feelings towards refugees. I believe this will attract them because it is a major problem in our society where everyone is talking about it, our final title sequence will reflect in to what is going on around us today and i believe that this will attract our audience. Furthermore, it is real life situations, therefore many people can relate to our title sequence which is something good.

Task 36 - PITCH 7&8: Mise-en-scene - Anika Rahman

MISE-EN-SCENE

LOCATION:
The location that we are going to use is going to be a dark gloomy area with dull buildings so, that we can match the location to the suffering countries as much as we can as possible. Those gloomy areas will be used for the flashbacks the main character has of her past. As she gets flashbacks of her past, we will film in a cheap area where there are unattractive buildings.
Perhaps, an area like this.
And for the present, before she gets her flashbacks and in between of her flashbacks, the character will be in Central London which is a very busy area. The character will walk through an area in Central London while she sees a homeless person just sitting on the floor and people ignoring her.
Perhaps an area like this where business people walk past
SETTING:
The setting of our film will start from the main character walking along the same street that the homeless person is sitting and she continues to walk until she sees the homeless person and from then her flashbacks begin to appear.

PROPS & COSTUMES:-
The homeless person will have a baggy dirty t-shirt on, a blanket and will look scruffy to make it clear to the audience that they're homeless. The businesswoman that we see in one of the main character's flashback will be dressed in a suit and maybe, have a suitcase on her to make it clear that she is a business woman.

Task 35 - PITCH 10: Title credits - Anika Rahman

TITLE CREDITS

By Anika Rahman

The font and order:

The font of the title credits will be Helvetica. It will be spaced out and bold which will make it clear and easy to read for the audience. The title credits will be big enough for the target audience who are young adults and could also reach to older audiences. The order of the title sequence will be in a typical order as I blogged on blogpost 7.
The font 'Helvetica'

How the titles will appear:

The title credits will be up for a short amount of time but they will fade in and fade out slowly to create a dramatic effect, giving the impression that the genre is going to be drama.

Fading in and out of title

What type of title sequence:

The titles are going to come as titles over moving images. So, while the shots are playing, the titles will slowly fade in and appear over the moving images. The title will be of the same font but in a bigger size and it will stay on the screen for a longer time than the other title credits, so the audience remembers the name. The title will come over a moving image of the main character walking along the busy area. The title will be over her back while she's walking and it will slowly fade as the camera slowly turns around to her face.

Example of how the title will appear over the character's back while she's walking.

Task 34 - PITCH 11: Cinematic detail - Chifa Khelfaoui

Below is pictures of the draft storyboard for the title sequence.

Shot-types:

There will be about 8 close-up shots on the first scene. These will be:

  • A close-up shot on the girl's newspaper of a recent Syrian event being tossed into her bag.
  • A close-up shot of the girl's boots to show her walking followed by a match-cut of her upper body being shown.
  • Another close-up shot is the small bowl with little coins inside to show her past circumstance.
  • A close-up shot of her giving the bag of food to the beggar.
  • Close-up shots of her sad facial expressions when she remembers her same position in the past.
Mise-en-scene:

  • A newspaper with printed Syrian disaster events.
  • A bag of food.
  • A small bowl.
  • A few coins; mostly 20p and 50p's
Sound:

  • There will be a dramatic, sad soundtrack at the beginning, something like the "Titanic" soundtrack.
  • The Foley sounds there will be are:
  • The sound of the coins rattling
  • The sound of the newspaper page being turned
  • The sound of the beggar crying
  • The crowd noise outside and in the cafe.

In this other scene, there will be mainly medium shots to show the location and what the characters are doing.

Shot types:

  • 3 close-ups of the facial expressions to show her disappointment/sadness
  • 3 over-the-shoulder shots when she is speaking to the guy
  • 5 medium shots when she is praying
  • 3 wide angles to show the setting of the office and to show that the guy she is seeking help from is a powerful character
Costume Ideas:

  •  A suit for the guy
  •  Smart skirt and blouse for the secratary
  •  Ripped, casual clothes to show the girl (the beggar is how she was in the past)

Mise-en-scene:

Office equipments such as:

  • Laptop/computer
  • Notebook
  • Pens
  • Phone
  • Desk and chairs
 Sound:

There will be no scores here to emphasis the impotance of the conversation. However, there will be Foley sound effects such as the sounds of:

  • Pen writing on paper.
  • The guy drinking his coffee
  • The sound of the phone ringing

Other sound will be mostly dialogue coming from the secretary, the boss and the then beggar, the syrian girl.

We branded our blog slightly, with the use of the background image in order to fit in with our genre - Drama.

Task 31 - PITCH 1: The Film - Neena Kaur

THE PITCH...

Working name: Refugee

The whole film will consist of a Syrian girls life in present and past and the comparisons. As an outline of the whole film, she will reminisce about her harsh past life like whilst in the present. For example, one memory is triggered through seeing the beggar and she remembers of how unfortunate she was in the past. When it ends, we intend to show a flashback of the departure of her and her sisters hand.

In the opening sequence, we will start off with the beggar walking; hopelessly. For this, we will use the location of central London. The main character at this point is also walking and thinks back of how her life was when she was once like that - triggering her memories from the past. She then goes to the mosque (another one of our locations) and prays - this is where she will have flashbacks and at this point we will have different camera angles and movements showing the two lives she has experienced and is experiencing. The flashbacks will consist of:
1. Meeting a councillor who isn't willing to help
2. Her life as a beggar
3. The departure of her and her sisters hand

Key Props: Coins (money), Newspaper, Food, Blanket
Locations: Central London, Building site, College, Mosque
Setting: Busy street, Classroom in college
Costume: Four main costumes:
1. Ripped/dirty clothing for beggar
2. Casual clothing for present day life
3. Smart suit for councillor
4. Smart dress for secretary
Lighting: Street filming will be set in broad daylight - so it'll already be bright, when syria is shown there could be a sepia type of lighting or dimmer lighting - this can set a dramatic tone that can also connote it's not from present day

Task 30 - Planning

30. Planning Homework

HALF TERM PLANNING HOMEWORK

Finding and planning locations and settings:

1. One of the locations that is suitable for filming is a well known area where Big Ben is located (Westminister). This is because the area looks busy and posh which is perfect for the refugee to beg.

Task 29 - PITCH 9: Sound design - Chifa Khelfaoui

Sounds to use - Chifa

Coin dropping - This sound is part of the flashback to show how the girl was back then, she had less money and people walking by dropped some coins in there.

Heels clacking - This is the sound of the secretary's heels. Its to show their better position and class in society compared to the poor girl's position.

Crowd of people talking - This is so that the busy place the girl is in seems more realistic.

A cinematic, orchestral score to match the dramatic, serious tone of the film. We are going to be using the first few seconds of the "Little Planet"

Another soundtrack to use is "Relaxing" from Bensound. This could be used when the girl is praying to show the comfort she is in her religion.

Lastly, we may use a similiar, echoic instrumental score that can be used throughout the flashbacks she has to indicate a past event.

Task 28 - Sound in previous student title sequences

Analysing the use of sound in previous student title sequences.

Duality
After the distribution company’s ident has been shown, there appears to be some heavy and violent sound effects which are then followed by a complete contrast of calm and beautiful sounds such as birds singing, wind whooshing, water running and fire crackling. Soon there are more non- diegetic sound effects such as the sound of heavy breathing. Moreover, the use of Foley sound such as a clock ticking was effective to creating a mysterious atmosphere. Later on we hear more heavy breathing followed by the sound of low teeth chattering which was slowed down to create a dramatic effect. Then, the camera pans right to the bunk beds next to the little girl in there is a loud diegetic sound of her crying. The scene ends with a quiet, diegetic sound of the tea dripping. The girl is then grabbed with the sound of a high, wind blowing effect which then gets lower as the title "Duality" is shown. As this happens any sounds that could be heard slowly faded away.

Shutter
In the opening scene as the protagonist is shown there is a non-diegetic score that creates a sinister tone which is followed by a Foley sound of the camera shutter as a car number plate is shown. There are then more ambient sounds of the car doors being locked and a loud Foley sound like the sound of a door being closed. This is followed by the diegetic sound of people talking coming from the walkie-talkie which seems to be edited to a high frequency to give it a static sounding effect. This adds to the creepy atmosphere. The scene ends with one more Foley sound of the camera shutter.

Task 28 - Student title sequences

Previous student sound work

Below is the first analysis on Camtasia of a students sound work:

Duality

Below is the second analysis of a students sound work:

Task 28 - Analysing Sound

Duality

After the distribution company has been shown, there appears to be some heavy drone sound effects which is then followed by ambient sounds such as birds singing, the leaves dancing in the air and the sound of the lake running. Shortly after, there is also a loud ambient sound of the fireplace. As the decoration of cups are shown, there are non-diegetic sound effects such as the heavy breathing. Moreover, the Foley sound of the clock ticking was slowed down so that it matched the clock's pase of the hands ticking. Later on we hear more heavy breathing followed by the sound of low teeth chattering which was slowed down to create a dramatic effect. After the cup is shown, we hear diegetic sounds of the tea dripping which appears to be louder in the sound mix. Then, the camera pans right to the bunkbeds next to the little girl in there is a loud deigetic sound of her crying. The scene ends with a quiet, diegetic sound of the tea dripping. The girl is then grabbed with the sound of a high, wind blowing effect which then gets lower as the title "Duality" is shown.

Shutter

As the girl is shown, there is a loud, Foley sound of hearbeats followed by  a sinister score. Then, as the car is being driven, there are ambient sound effects of the car and the sinister score gets higher. We then hear the sound of the camera shutter as the car plate is being shown. There are then more ambient sounds of the car doors being locked and a loud Foley sound of a bang, sounds like a door being shut closed. The loud banging sound effects and the Foley sound of the heartbeats continues until the Walkie Talkie is shown, in which the creepy score gets louder and we hear a conversation going on between the two people. The siniser music continues as the title "Shutter" is shown, followed by a Foley sound of a camera shutter.

28: Previous Student's Title Sequence Analysis

ANALYSIS OF PREVIOUS STUDENTS' TITLE SEQUENCES

The first title sequence that I'm going to analyse is called "Vengeance":

The title sequence starts from a young woman typing and only the ambient sound of her typing can be heard. However, when she sees a picture of a man and realises something, a sound turns on with almost sounds like an alarm going off and it gets faster and louder as a man opens the door with a gun in his hand and then it becomes quiet. Then we hear another ambient sound of the door closing and the lady typing hears and gets frightened. While she is frightened and is panicking, quickly putting the things in the draw, another sound effect that sounds rough and intense. The volume gets louder as the man attaches a silencer to the gun. After the man is upstairs, the woman watches him quietly while there is another sound effect which makes it seem like that she will get caught any time. The sound effects increases and decreases volume and speed along with the character's movement. The man goes downstairs and points the gun when the woman appears and pushes him and his gun. We hear this and the man coughing. And then we hear the woman smashing a glass bottle on his head.

The second title sequence that I'm going to analyse is "Unhinged".

The title sequence uses diegetic sounds as well as non diegetic sounds. We can hear birds chirping and also the wind while it brushed along the trees shown in the video. 18 seconds in and it changes it's sound to a sound of places with more grass and bushes. The soundcape can be heard of birds, bugs, wind etc. 28 seconds in and the sound quietens down and lighter sound of wind can be heard. And then again, the previous sound of birds and grass comes on again and finally we hear someone saying 'Oh God, help me' and keeps asking for help and groans in pain. He continues to grown until a woman screams "Oh my god" and then straight away, a sound of gunshot.

My favourite and least favourite:

My favourite video is the first one because it uses different types of sound effects along with ambient sounds which makes it seem realistic. The genre was also quite clear due to the conventions of guns and technology.
However, I did not like the second video because there weren't any additional sound effects which means less editing of sound was used. Also, the sound didn't transition very well between shots and seemed messy.

Task 28 - Sound analysis for previous students title sequence

Sound Analysis

Duality

In the first 10 seconds after the production title is shown, we hear a recurring, scary score which is followed by a sound of drones which become louder as the house is shown. We then hear a diegetic sound of the fireplace.  After there is a low Foley sound of a cat purring which is then followed by the ambient sound of the clock ticking. We also hear another Foley sound of heavy breathing.  After the cup is shown we hear a diegetic sound of the tea spilling.  We then hear another diegetic sound of the girl crying as the music stops. In the end as the girl is being dragged away we hear Foley sounds of what seems to be the wind blowing and loud thunder.

Shutter

In the opening scene there is a non-diegetic score which seems to be sinister which is followed by a Foley sound of the camera shutter as the car plate is shown. The sound motif of the music gets lower throughout the scene. We then hear more Foley sounds on the camera shutter followed by the diegetic sound of people talking coming from the walkie-talkie which seems to be edited to a high frequency. The scene ends with one more Foley sound of the camera shutter along with non-diegetic sounds of recurring drones.

Task 24 - Individual Idea

Task 24 - Individual idea

Task 24 - Individual idea

24. Individual Idea

MY INDIVIDUAL IDEA

The genre is drama which is based on true events, so the audience can take it seriously and reflect on it. The idea is inspired by the sorrowful events happening in countries such as Syria and many more. The events where people including children are killed, where people have no human rights and where people are torn apart from their families.

The storyline involves a young woman with a tragic past who is stable in the present. So, there would be flashbacks of her past as she sees a homeless person in an area full of business people, people from higher class. She feels sympathy towards the person and so, she spends the entire day with the homeless person. The way this is presented is by showing the clock going fast forward as well as what they are doing together in between.

The characters are:

The main woman: The young woman with a tragic past who gets flashbacks of it.
The homeless person: The person that reminds the young woman of her tragic past and gets help from her.
The mother: The mother of the main woman is shown in her flashback where it just shows their hands being separated.

The types of title sequences to use:

  • Titles over moving images
  • Simple bold fonts
  • Slow transitioning fades
  • Dramatic music in the background with ambient sounds such as crowds

Task 24 - Individual Idea
